Background

Iluá Hauck da Silva is a London based mixed media artist. She studied fine arts in Brazil, where she originally comes from, and has also graduated in History of Art (BA Hons) at Goldsmiths College, University of London. She later specialised in glass making. Over the last five years she has been developing a practice, which draws on her diverse background and employs a wide range of concepts and media, with a focus on glass. She has exhibited at the Shoreditch Town Hall, had public pieces on display in Hoxton, and in 2011 had her first solo museum show in Brazil.

Statement

My practice consists of sculptures, mixed media 2D work, installations, and work on paper. I deal with a diverse range of concepts, and aim to visually reflect, expose and articulate different aspects of the human condition. The idea behind each piece determines the materials I use, and most of these concepts are expressed through high quality, luxuriously crafted pieces. Due to my background in art history and art theory I often produce work, which rethinks classic themes such as Vanitas, Greek Mytholgy, and Religion, amongst others. By presenting classic subjects in a contemporary manner, I articulate reflections and comments on social values, history and traditions, as well as on our attitude and feelings towards them at present.

I rely on glass, velvet, leather, lace, rich colours and various techniques in order reach beauty, engage the viewer, and deliver an absorbing visual experience.
